About the Lagavulin distillery
On the island of Islay, clandestine distillation activities already existed in the 18th century, when the islanders refused to comply with the requirements of legality. It was not until 1816 that John Johnston, a local farmer and distiller, founded Lagavulin at the foot of the walls of Dunyvaig, which housed the fortress of the lords of the island.
At that time, a real tax collection system was set up, in which the British government controlled the number of stills: legal distillation then became widespread.Islay is a reference in terms of single malt production: 7 distilleries are still active, among which Lagavulin is probably the most famous. Its smoky and peated malt so recognizable, warm and elegant, is unenmity among amateurs.
